Regal Mine (Clark Fork)

This trip was from quite a long time ago. Because of that the pictures are pretty poor. There is not too much to say about the Regal Mine, but it is not terribly hard to get to and worth the stop if you are in the area.

It was first claimed in 1926 by the Regal Mining Corporation of New York. The veins on the mountain had been known prior to this time, but little had been done with them. The company quickly built a road and hauled equipment into the mine. By 1930 the mine had a 350’ main adit and a shorter upper adit. The workings explored a zone of weak veins containing pods of lead-silver ore. None of these pods developed into much, and it appears that the mine never produced anything. By 1934 the mine was listed as “inactive” and it appears that no work of consequence has been done since then.

Confusingly, there is another Regal Mine ~50 miles north of here by Bonners Ferry. I could not find any connection in ownership between these mines. It appears that the Regal Mine near Bonners Ferry was owned by a man named Guy Riegel and the name “Regal” may have been a pun.

The road to the mine was cut in 1927, but it has since deteriorated into a trail.
