Black Rabbit Petroglyphs

Dan and I took a trip down to the Salton Sea region to look for a small set of petroglyphs I had heard about along a Cahuilla Indian trail. We were determined to find it.

Access to the site wasn’t easy; a series of gates and farmland blocked most routes. After a couple of hours just trying to find the best way in, we got as close as we could and hiked the rest of the way. We finally caught up with the trail after wandering a labyrinth of alluvial boulders washed down from the Santa Rosa mountains.

The petroglyph site itself is relatively small, and after spending some time there, we felt it was used as a rest stop between camps in the mountains and the ancient shoreline below.
