We visited an interesting medium-sized mine out in the middle of nowhere of Central Nevada. Multiple shafts develop the mine and drop to the 500 ft level. The workings below the 300 ft level were wet, rotten, and caving, so we didn’t spend much time down there. Otherwise, it was a pretty straightforward and fun place. It is great to see ore cars still in the place where the miners left them.
The mine was discovered in 1934 by W. H Leonard. In 1937, the Nevada Scheelite Corp. bought the mine and worked it until 1951. After that, it was operated by various companies until the 1980s. The mine produced over 200,000 tons of tungsten over its life.
